Interior Design Trend Forecast I 2025

2025 is just around the corner — we look ahead to what trends might feature on your Instagram feed in the coming years and offer some ideas on how to incorporate these into your home refresh, makeover or renovation.

           Limewash Walls

A trend that started to emerge in 2022 and looks to solidify its trendy status in 2023 is limewash walls. With Google searches for limewash paint up 79% the resurgence of this old technique is undeniable.

We see this as a popular choice for large flat walls needing some texture and depth. For homes with tall ceilings this can be a way to make a large space feel cosier and more interesting. A way to amp up the effect of limewash is to get creative with the colour — while we mostly associate limewash with natural milky tones it can be used in all sorts of hues.

We love the use of dark moody tones in a bedroom for a relaxed cocoon-like feeling.

           Biophilic Design

Spaces inspired by and intertwined with nature are here to stay. Biophilia is the idea that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. The term translates to ‘the love of living things’ in Ancient Greek.

There are many ways we can incorporate nature into our homes — through the obvious like houseplants, natural materials, and natural light. There are also wider design principles inspired by nature we can incorporate into our spaces such as organic shapes, the flow of fresh air and textural richness.

           Moody & Dramatic Spaces

We think there are 3 key ingredients to an on-trend moody space for 2023.

           1. Monochrome — keeping the wall colour, furniture and drapes all of the same hue makes a dramatic statement.

            2. Add texture and depth — to keep our monochrome from falling flat, it’s important to create visual interest and depth by layering different textures of the same hue such as different fabrics, wall finishes and decor.

            3. Take a trip to the dark side — nothing says moody like a darker colour palette, and deep blues, purples and greens

are at the top of our list.

           Bold Marble

When you think marble you probably think white Calcutta marble with grey veins, which has earned its classic status. However, bold and unexpected marbles are going to be the rage in the coming years.

For those of us committed to black and white, consider selecting a highly variegated white marble for a statement benchtop in your next kitchen renovation. Or black marble with white veining for a modern bathroom makeover.

For the bold there is a whole rainbow of coloured marble out there! We are seeing the likes of pink, burgundy or green marble with white veining rising in popularity. These expressive stones pair well with the maximalism style also on the rise.

Of course, marble isn’t accessible for everyone, but brands like Formica offer marble look finishes that can serve the same visual effect. Or alternatively, consider incorporating marble accessories such as book ends to create a luxe look without the scary price tag.

           Statement Tiling

Another rising star is statement tiles. Typically featured in bathrooms or kitchen backsplashes, the possibilities with tiles are endless. Here are some of our favourite styles:

            Penny round tiles

            — these look great in a monotone colour with a contrasting or complimenting grout colour. Or get creative with a black and white mosaic design as often seen in mid-century design.

            Geometric tiles

           —

either in shape or print. For a shaped tile we recommend keeping your tiles all one colour or colour family - let the tile shape create the pattern and visual interest. For printed tiles a simple or large tile shape will be the best canvas for your groovy geometric design.

            Delft tiles

           —

Delft tiles and Delftware in general go as far back as the 1500's but look to make a comeback in the coming years with many interior designers jumping onto this micro trend. These charming white and blue tiles often tell a story and capture a moment in time. These tiles work beautifully in the bathroom as shower or bath surrounds, in the kitchen as a backsplash or more traditionally as chimney surround for your fireplace.

Return of the Arch

Arches have been utilised in architecture across many cultures throughout history – and in 2023 they are making a comeback at the top of our Trends to Watch list. They bring an organic feature to our homes which are so often ruled by straight lines. Arches provide contrast and visual interest to your space. To inspire you, we have put together four ideas for incorporating arches into your next renovation.

           Arched Windows & Doors

Arched doors and windows add a classic and whimsical feel to any building. But when renovating exterior windows and doors, it's important to consider whether an arched window or door would clash or complement the style of the rest of your home. The photo above showing an arched door beside a large arched window in a corner kitchen is a case in point. While the sleek black metal window frames complement the soft curved window seat and echo the lines of the island bench, the door to the outside is overkill – too many arches, too close together.

For interior spaces, it’s unlikely you will be converting all interior doors to arched doors, so consider where they could make a statement – an ensuite or pantry door perhaps. An archway is also an attractive option for open doorways. We love the idea of using archways to create zones within an otherwise open-plan space because they not only create ambience but also add a sense of mystery to what may be on the other side.

           Arched Decor

Not looking to renovate anytime soon? That’s fine, you can still embrace the arch with some decor or paint. Here are some of our favourite curved decor items:

            Arched mirrors:

These are super on-trend and a relatively cost effective way to add an arch to your space. Great to use with a vanity in your bedroom or bathroom.

            Arched or curved headboards:

This is a wonderful way to make your bed the feature of the room. We love the feeling of luxury an upholstered headboard brings these are widely available to buy or if you’re so inclined, DIY.

            Arched candles, vases and art:

Small decor objects are a great and affordable way to add style to your space. These smaller pieces also come in a wide variety of colours, materials and different curvy designs allowing you to select pieces that really reflect your personal style.

             Painted arches:

Arches painted on or set into a wall can add a sense of depth and classic style to a room.

Although not technically an arch, this kind of seating still embraces the curve – just in the horizontal orientation. Utilising furniture with curves is a great way to add a soft organic feeling to a room. Curved seating also encourages conversation as it naturally seats everybody facing each other, as opposed to a traditional sofa facing a TV screen.

Above, check out the kitchen and curved booth-style dining space designed by the team at Pzazz Design. The seating is designed to flow seamlessly round the curved table, creating a cosy communal space that's perfect for a family or group of friends. The booth seating also features built-in storage – funky and functional!

           Arched Alcoves

As I am sure you are convinced already, arches are certainly back in fashion. So in your next renovation, why not consider pairing some carefully thought-out arched doorways and windows with another classic design feature – the alcove!

These recessed areas can serve all sorts of purposes. A recessed arch in a wall will not only add depth and style to any room but may be the ideal place to display your treasures or favourite books. A larger arched nook could be the perfect place for reading or relaxing. Is it just me or does something about the gentle organic curve of arches in a home give you a feeling of calm and peace too?

An arched alcove is a great way to add personality and character to your space as well as express your own personal style.

As you will have seen on Instagram and the pages of lifestyle magazines celebrities aren't always known for their relatable or even good taste in home design but every now and again we are happy to be surprised by some stylish celebrity homes. To help you achieve this celebrity style we scoured through our favorite Architectural Digest celebrity home tours and compiled a list of trends and through-lines that gave these homes their Pzazz.

Throughout these celebrity home tours, almost all feature unique and colourful wallpapers. Often in powder rooms, kids rooms, or if you're David Harbor and Lily Allen then everywhere. While some appeal to my taste more than others I adore the theme. Choosing something bold, joyful and unique. Each celeb gladly talks about what drew them to the print and you can see that it is something that reflects their personal style and brings them joy. And I love how accessible this is to anyone especially when you scale it down to a feature wall or copy Jesse Tyler Fergusson's games room and opt for a feature ceiling. There is a huge range available online via sites such as Hovia and Spoonflower - enjoy browsing and find something that speaks to you!

Bringing the Outdoors In with Plants & Nature

Biophilia seems to be the trend that never dies; I wish I could say the same for my houseplants. But these celebs embrace the green thumb and almost all of our favourite celebrity homes prominently feature houseplants, interior trees and generous floral arrangements. And they really do lift the space! Our prize for the most relatable plant owner is Kacey Musgraves with her plant wall, love this as the perfect accessory to a sun-soaked bright, and light kitchen.

           Colourful Sofas

One trend that was across almost all the home tours was pops of colour in upholstered sofas and chairs. This is something that I think us Kiwi's could really take note on - sofas don't have to be drab grey, brown or black. And that doesn't mean we have to go all the way to cream and white which screams 'nobody actually live here'. And you don't necessarily even have to buy a whole new sofa or chair - find your local re upholsterer and choose any fabric of your choice.

           Large Scale Art

Art and fame do sometimes seem to go hand in hand and is perhaps one of the most admirable way the ultra rich invest their wealth. One theme of the art throughout celebrity homes we noticed was not just the rarity or quantity but the scale. Large art pieces that draw attention and make a splash, while this is easier in their typically larger homes I think this trend is still accessible with larger format prints innovative forms of art.

           And even bigger bathrooms

Typically in Kiwi homes bathrooms are the smallest rooms in the house - celebs turn this on its head with bathrooms and ensuites bigger than some of our master bedrooms. We love this luxurious feel and the ability to incorporate living elements into the bathroom so that it's not just a room of practicality but also a place to relax and rejuvenate. If you have this space, a large bathroom or ensuite is a real statement that will elevate your everyday lifestyle and set your home apart.

2025 Colour Trends for Your Next Renovation

While we try not to fall into the trap of chasing the latest trends (instead tuning into the personal style of our clients homes and using colours and styles that transcend the trend cycle) we can’t deny the anticipation and joy in Pantone and the likes ‘colour of the year’ announcements.

Like most things in life, it’s all about balance. Honour the tried and true but look to the fresh and trending for inspiration too (extra points for rhyming)! So we have scoured and analysed the colour forecasts from around the globe to bring you our personal favourites and how you could work them into your next renovation.

           Encore Blue from Valspar

Various hues of blue were popular among the 2024 colour trends and designers agree that they aren’t going anywhere. With last year’s shades leaning cool and calm encore blue is a deep cobalt a perfect pick from the ultramarine family. This shade evokes an unexpected sense of nature pulling from the colours of the night sky and deep sea. This colour feels classic yet modern and will bring vibrancy to any room whether it be on your walls, as a finish for cabinetry or in your soft furnishings.

Dulux Emerge, Still & Recollect Palletes

While it must feel special to be the colour of the year Dulux takes a much more practical approach in forecasting 3 trending palletes for 2025; Emerge, Still & Recollect. Each pallete is made up of a foundation of neutral beige, browns and warm whites that are complimented by accents of greens, blues or rich burgundies, the palettes are suited to any architectural style of home.

Dulux predicts contrasting colour schemes will re-emerge for those drawn to an energetic and sophisticated palette. For the neutral palette lovers, warmth and tactility will be a key influence in any finished design.

These palettes all work towards the same goal of creating interiors with a sense of nurture and positivity. Dulux Colour Specialist Davina Harper explains that in times of instability, such as the current cost of living crisis and ongoing overseas conflicts colour can be a powerful antidote to lift spirits and provide a sense of comfort and warmth.

           Wine Lovers Rejoice

Rich red burgundy hues feature across various colour forecasts; namely Rumours by Behr and Raku by C2 Paint both crowned colour of the year respectively. These earthy and deep colours feel both calming and dramatic and can work well in many home styles. Philippa Radon, C2 Paint’s colour director describes Raku as

“An expression of balance, comfort, and timeless elegance. Raku embodies the art of revitalizing the old with the succession of its renewal—an echo of a timeless classic flourishing in a modern world.”

These brownish red shades are evocative of mahogany and similarly are suited to colour drench a more formal space such as a dining room or office and will shine when complimented by traditional features such as ornate gold accents and ornate fabrics. Or for smaller projects where you want just a pop of colour consider your fav burgundy tone for your front door or kitchen cabinets.

           Purple Reigns Supreme

Though not yet announced several forecasters have slated Pantone’s Future Dusk shade as the much-anticipated Pantone Colour of the Year. This trend of deep moody purples is echoed in some other highlighted hues such as Violet by Minwax and Purple Basil by Glidden. Glidden describes this jewel tone as representative of self-discovery and self-expression and the maximalism style so many are tapping into while revamping their homes. This color is equally cozy and warm as it is opulent and rich, making it a perfect paint for those who want to dive into colour but still want a sense of security.

For interior use Inside the shade be used in offices and bathrooms, as well as on kitchen cabinets. Colour-drench an entire space for an eye-catching statement or create contrast with patterned wallpaper. Be sure to get a sample first—depending on the paint’s finish or texture of the surface it’s applied to, the paint can morph into various shades, some leaning more blue and others more red. And of course this is the perfect shade to pair with wood tones – a match made in interior design heaven.
